Introduction
Hello Enger Family..... My name is: Fingal>Thorwald>Marvin> Gerry Don Enger
About 40 years ago I saw a copy of our Enger Family Book and was impressed that my great-grandfather was such a prominent man. It was interesting to "visually" see and follow the branches of his family and how they had grown over the years since he emigrated to the US from Norway. I knew a few aunts, uncles and cousins from my branch and a few others, but when my folks started getting supplements to the branches I got lost and could no longer "visualize" the tree and how the branches were spreading out. About 15 years ago, as a draftsman and inflicted with a mind for details, I started a hand drawn tree on a roll of paper that combined the Enger Book Branches and the supplements into a long roll of family branches and names. It was never shared with anyone but it was an interesting endeavor. It was about 8 feet long and I think I still have it rolled up somewhere. As my drafting career advanced, so did technology and soon my job was being done on computers. I attempted to draw the Tree with my drafting software, but gave up. My job required me to use other software including Microsoft Office products so I decided to put the Tree data into a spreadsheet using Microsoft Excel. Now, I have an "almost" up-to-date "visual" representation of the entire family tree, but I still have not shared it with anyone. I scanned the Enger Book pages, all the supplements and a bunch of photos and put the data and a copy of the New Enger Tree on a CD to share with my family, but thought it should be shared by the "entire family". So....I got the Tree into shape for printing each branch and gave it and some CD's to my brother Virgil to bring to the 2005 Reunion. Many relatives were interested and wanted a copy. It was still a work in progress (and always will be), and I thought it would be difficult to mail a CD to every member, so I decided a Web site would be best for relatives to view, print or download the Tree. I never tried to create a web site, so, I learned how, and this Web Site is the result (so far). It got to be a huge endeavor and I hope I can get it into shape, and maybe then pass it on to another family member who may be interested in keeping it up-to-date. Dennis Enger has given me the registers for the last 2 reunions and those who have email addresses will receive an invitation to visit this site. There are some technical issues I still need to address and the site is still under construction and I am learning as I go, so be patient as I learn how to make the site better. Any comments or suggestions are welcome. The information on this site is only as accurate as the information contained in the bi-annual supplements. If you find any errors or omissions in the data on this site you can email me at genger2@comcast.net
Just for information purposes: Normally, family trees follow both the paternal (male) and maternal (female) branches of a family, but since our family name changed from "Lunde" to "Enger" back in 1844, Helga (the original editor of the Enger Book) followed the maternal "Lunde" name back to Oluff 1600 A.D. and that is the line that was published in 1960. At this time I do not plan to document lines other than our direct lines from Oluff to Fingal's children. I do list the siblings of our early generations and there may be links to additional information found on their pages, but I have to stop somewhere. I have corresponded with another family member (Larry Ray6 Enger) who used a genealogy software program to document his roots not through the maternal "Lunde name", but through the paternal first husband of Eli Gulbrandsdatter (Lunde) Enger. Eli's first husband was Gulbrand Trondson2 Buttingsrud (Fingal's3 father) but they changed their name to "Enger" when they purchased half of the place "Enger". Larry (and most of us) can traces our roots back to Trond Trondsen1 Buttingsrud, Gulbrand Trondson Buttingsrud's2 father. Note: The numbers indicate generation numbers from his software (I think). Future updates may show this offshoot to the male branch, but for now, this site and the New Enger Tree will follow Helga's line back to Oluff Lunde. If this web site ever gets done, I may look into purchasing some genealogy software and link it to this site as well. I have also run into another family members' efforts while "surfing the web". Her name is Kari Northrup and is a descendant of Peder (Peter) Asleson Lunde the younger brother of our line "Eli". She has done a lot of research on her line and also provides additional links to Asle (Eli and Peter's father) and also back to Gulbrand Gulbrandson Lunde (Asle's father). I include the link on the their pages on this site, as well as HERE. I have updated the information found in the Enger Book to reflect this new information source.
Enger Family Book Helga Marie Balstad descendant of > Elli Elise (Enger) Balstad> 2nd Child, was the chief editor of the original Enger Family Book, published in 1960. At that time, there were about 270 descendants of Fingal G. Enger listed, after he emigrated to the United States from Norway. His brother Asle remained in Norway and 16 descendants were listed.
Supplements Every two years a Supplement to the Enger Book adds new descendants and as of the 2005 Supplement, there are now about 900 listed. Helga did a wonderful job of documenting and illustrating the Family Book and the Branches of Fingal's family, but the many documents that now exist make it hard to visualize the Enger Tree as it exists today. Dennis Enger> Edward> Folke Harry> 2nd Child, has been collecting family information and handing out the Supplements for years.
Enger Family Tree PAF Software I purchased the ancestral software that other family members have used to document our family. The software is called Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and it is purchased through the Church of the Latter Day Saints. The Family trees you will see on individual pages are reports and charts from PAF. I created a report for each branch and copied it into the web site. PAF software is available free from: http://www.familysearch.com
Enger Family Tree Spreadsheet This document is what I had developed before I started using the PAF software. It is pretty current and you may find it interesting to view or print out your branch. It was created using Microsoft Excel.
